wil, i hope you're using a disassembler in addition to your hex editor. i have my doubts about getting xms working through editing the executable directly. you'd have to pretty much completely rewrite some functions, and zzt running in real mode doesn't help much either. something that could work is...

zzt.exe dynamically allocates a buffer of exactly 20000 bytes which it uses to (among other things) store boards when switching between them. you can go over that limit, but since the memory is dynamically allocated you can never tell what (if anything) the bytes beyond the limit will overwrite. any...
