MZX vs. ZZT

MZX vs. ZZT
It's inevitable, MZX will likely crush ZZT's popularity and MZX will dominate the text GCS community. No offence of course. But with that ZZT to MZX converter, the end of ZZT is near.

Re: MZX vs. ZZT
Personal opinions ahead, nmiaow if you're a fan of MegaZeux/ZIG/SuperZZT/Plastic/whatever.
Too much complexity is bad. MegaZeux has a lot of different features, and that makes it powerful. But it also makes it harder to learn, because the feature set consists of every cool feature someone added on a whim. I'm not criticizing the open source development model; I'm just pointing out that MegaZeux suffers from feature creep. In contrast, ZZT is versatile enough for most games, yet it is easy to learn because it is simple.
Case in point: There's this really old GCS which makes even ZZT look complex. This GCS isn't even object oriented -- you have to handle all that yourself. It's so popular, Intel even makes dedicated hardware for running x86 worlds (they call them "PC games", but same thing).
But seriously, ZZT hit a really good balance between power and simplicity. All the ZZT clones try to find a better balance, but I sometimes wonder if they're searching in the wrong direction -- perhaps a slightly simpler, slightly more consistent ZZT could really take off.
I don't know.
@Giel: Which features in particular make MegaZeux's domination inevitable? I'm just curious what you think.

I remember when Megazeux first came to the AOL Libraries back in whatever year it was. My older brother and I shit ourselves when we read about what it was supposed to do; mod support, editable graphics and other stuff that ZZT couldn't dream to do on a good day.
Since we were on 2400 baud at the time the over-a-megabyte download was slated to take upwards of an hour. This was when you paid for AOL by the amount of time you were signed on, too, so it would incur a lot of costs in that respect, too. Still, we stuck out the download for Megazeux, because, fuckin' A sweet.
So, after a painfully long and costly download my brother and I bit our lower lips and started up Megazeux, and it didn't work.
I haven't touched it since

fun fact: although he has not replied to any of this thread (yet), giel has written a bunch of game reviews on the main site, which i'm just going to quote here:

Good game. The reprogramming you did with ZZT is impressive. But next time, please don't recode the ZZT engine itself, people will only yell at you for this cause they want to stick to the stuff they are familiar with. Plus, due to the recoding of the ZZT engine in this game, the ZZT to MZX converter will turn most of the commands into comments.

But of course,I mainly use MZX. I'd just use the ZZT to MZX converter on this thing, put a 'playershot' marco on all the objects. Put a explode (number) marco on the objects AFTER the 'playershot' marco. Play the game, and just blow everything up.

TOO GAY! That crap ruins games! Even Blue Buckaroo is better than *this*! (Even though Blue Buckaroo is an MZX game)
