A new breed of competition
I got bored one day and found a crap zzt game and started to fix it up for the sake of it. This sparked an idea, why not have a competition based around rebuilding a crap zzt game from Z2.

Hey, be nice!
Personally, I would rather make an original game than try to improve an existing game by someone else. However, I think that there is a potential contest idea here. The contest could be about taking a crummy game's concept and radically revising and improving it. It wouldn't be a contest not about remaking crummy games, but about making games inspired by what the games could have been - like any other ZZT contest, only with the contest topic being in the form of a ZZT game.
Of course, a lot of crummy games don't have much of a concept to revise - the storyline is basically "fight pre-fab monsters until you get to the THE END sign." There isn't much there to improve on. If you held a contest, you'd have to stick with games that had an interesting concept but never did anything with it.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that it could work, but you'd have to be really careful to make sure that the resulting game had a lot of originality and wasn't just version 2 of the crummy game.

Quantum P. makes a good point, the game would have to be chosen carefully to ensure that there is actually something worth while in it. I was thinking that there could be limitations such as you can only use as many boards as the original and the story has to stay relatively the same, though it can be bulked up at bit. but just a thought.
If this went ahead, who would enter?
