The story of how Shantae came around is pretty cool

It started out as a Super NES game, but then the Super NES died before WayForward could find a publisher. They didn't want to scrap all their nice sprite art to do 3D models for the N64 or the Playstation (though I don't see why they couldn't just make really nice sprite art for those consoles), so they started a version on Gameboy Color.

Capcom took a look at it and said "Hey, this is a pretty damn good game, we'll publish it". They did so, and it was the best damn Gameboy Color game ever. Too bad it came out right when the Gameboy Advance did; it didn't get nearly as mush popularity as it deserved.

There is a Shantae Advance that is nearly finished, but nobody will swoop in and publish it; there's talk that Namco will publish it, but nothing is confirmed.
