What's your favorite ZZT sidescrolling engine?

Post by JDMSonic »

Preferrably one that's able to do horizontal jumping. The one in ZZT Encyclopedia is pretty good for that, but it's not quite as responsive as I'd like. What have you seen that's good?

ZZT games tend not to be too great at sidescrolling.

But anyways I guess that I'd have to say Mega Man by Maullar Maullar.

I always liked Forest of ZZT and Freak Da Cat.

Stupid the Dog seems not too bad, though it could use a bit of lag at the top of the jump.

Okay, I modded the Stupid the Dog engine a bit to give it better hang-time at the top of the jump - it's my belief that frustration at not hitting those maximum-height-jumps isn't what a player of a platformer should be feeling.

It's saved on the board of Stupid the Dog that I used to modify the engine. Tell me if it seems responsive enough to you.

(And no, this isn't purely academic. I have an idea.)

Koopo the Lemming is my favorite. I liked also the engine in that game Treasure Hunter. And then there was that funky one in the ZZT Encyclopedia where you can hang on to something on the ceiling.

Commodore's engine for Sid's Disaster is the best I've seen. Pandemonium: Alpha is similar.

treasure hunter zzt by eJECTION13 is the best zzt sidescroller ever.

"stupid the dog" was a lame freak da cat ripoff by a lame idiot (freak da cat was good too, 2 was also good but WAY TOO HARD)
he looked upon the world and saw it was still depraved :fvkk:

Overall: Rotton egg for breakfast

I agree, Stupid the Dog was lame - but I like his engine.

Re: Sid's Disaster; Great game, wish whoever made it had played it through before it was released. ;) I just downloaded it the other day and I've been playing through it, and I can't tell you how frustrating it is to walk into a board and have the bats/frogs shooting the spikes that auto-end the game.

I'm basically modding the Stupid the Dog engine as follows:

Player gets locked in (hitting down button is a crouching stance), plus player clone for shot direction. Shooting down cycles through your special abilities.

I like the ninja engine I did for ninja pizza. It had triangle jumps off walls and ninja magic gliding. I sent it to dave2 for him to finish after making about half the game. He never did. The lesson: everything I create is doomed.

Sid's Disaster was THE best. ZZT sidescrollers always suck - except that one. It was cool because you had to work your way UPWARDS instead of to the right.
