Synchronizing object movement

Post by 519 »

I have a problem with controlling multiple objects at once. The player touches a control arrow, and it sends a command to a group of objects to move in unison. Problem is, they don't - one or two always lag, and it throws the entire thing off(sometimes to very amusing shapes). I've done sync'd objects before and I have seen it done, but I've forgotten the trick to getting them to all move at once.

Anyone know the solution?

It's a tricky problem, and hard to get to work perfectly, if at all. The thing is, ZZT doesn't update all the objects at the same time, it updates them one at a time in the order that they were created. A lot of mobility is pretty much impossibe without breakups, but moving in one direction is easier.

It's been a while since i've had to do it, so i'm not sure if you want the objects in front or in back to move first, my guess is the ones in front, so say you wanted a group of objects to move to the right. You'd create them in this order:

54321

with kevedit it tells you the number of the object so you can check if you're on the right path.

The mystical winds encylopedia has a detailed discussion about it, so if i'm simply confusing, go check that out.

Commodore's given you the real answer, but in addition, don't forget to make all of your objects #cycle 1. That might help, too.

For a great example of sync'd objects, check out Code Red:SE by Zenith Nadir! Near the beginning a blue car drives up!
