ZZT refuses to work... so I need help :o

Post by 98 »

I was trying to load up a ZZT game after months of not having done so. And guess what? ZZT no longer works. I get the following message (translated from Dutch):

16-bit MS-DOS subsystem
c:\random\blah\etc\zzt.exe
c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt. This system file is not suitable for MS-DOS and Windows applications. Choose End to quit application.

What in the hell? I'm using Windows XP and it used to work. I don't know what may have caused this. SP2 perhaps? *shrug*

Anyway, please help me out. Thanks a bunch, chaps!

it's probably one of those shitty windows updates what done it

i'm not an expert on these matters, but you COULD try loading it through <a href="http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php? ... >dosbox</a>.

Heh, and Ringo had the same exact problem nevertheless, I found a link that may solve this problem, from microsoft.com itself. Hopefully this'll work for you http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;324767.. hey, if not, go to the kevedit site and get the windows port, that way you can at least look through games... and make em i guess... and listen to music?[/url]

I think I used to have some kind of virus that kept deleting my autoexec.nt file. Luckily, I found copies of it stashed in a couple of other folders. :safe:

I had the same fucking problem. It's either a trojan virus or spyware that deltes system files- Just go into your windows folder and go to the "Repair" folder and copy the autoexec.nt file and paste it in the "System32" folder- and you're good-
---
You should back up the autoexec.nt file outside of the "repair" folder- cuz I did and soon mine disappeared-

Oh also you'll have to do it every time you load up your comp- lol unless there is a way to fix it that I don't know about.

That fixes the problem, indeed! I haven't tried rebooting yet, though.

I dunno about the Trojan and spyware thing, though... I've had many in the past, but my system currently seems to be clean (if I should believe the newest versions of Ad-aware SE and Spybot Search & Destroy).

While on the subject of DOS, is there a way to configure COMMAND.COM so that I get the full 640k of memory? (I really have no idea what I'm doing =()

Jazzy, click Start and then click Run

type command in the box

then type format c:

say yes to all the prompts (ignore the warnings, they are leftover code from older versions of format and don't really deserve your attention)

and there you have it!

Reason and logic had led people into the horrors of war; the only route to salvation was to reject logic and embrace anarchy and the irrational.
