Games that best demonstrate ZZT

Post by Commodore »

So let's say you want to show someone ZZT, as I do. What games would you show to best demonstrate the range of ZZT's abilities?

I'm leaning towards a platformer (undecided), Lebensraum, and maybe something along the lines of Pipeline 99.

It doesn't like PUSH THE TECHNOLOGICAL ENVELOPE but it's the best ZZT game ever any anyone who doesn't like it can choke to death.

I actually was going to show that one. Considering it's hilarious, and graphically intense.

I SHOWED STAMPEDE MY OWN GAMES SO HE'D THINK THEY WERE NEAT.

But MadGuy's stuff would work nicely. THEN IF THE CRIED ABOUT GRAPHICS I'D SHOW THEM FROST.

Just include a big variety of games: There are so many different genres and styles out there. Some people focus on graphics, while others find plot most important. A few find action games most appealing, and some enjoy puzzles.

As a game that defines zzt? Hmmm, I think I'd pick something like Indiana Jones or The Lost Gems or some other old school game. I've found that those tend to be my favorite.

Also, Escape from v2red is a great short action game.

I would say ESP and probably Chrono Wars. I have a friend who I have attempted to introduce to ZZT, he's really enjoyed Run-on, so yes, that as well. Treasure Hunter ZZT or whatever it's called by eJECTION13 is one of the best side-scrollers ever ever also. I'm sure there are others, they just slip my mind. Anything by WiL, though. Or MadTom.

You want to show off the aspects of ZZT that cannot be outdated. The game's engines (if any) need to work well and be transparent, the game should be easily playable by someone not used to ZZT, and it has to be fun (Duh.). Humor's good, as long as it doesn't rely on inside jokes. An interesting story, with good theming and atmosphere, is also nice to have.

I completely agree with that, not just because of what you said, but also because the original games were intended to be commercial software! They were simple, but they were high quality. If you take the graphics and sound away from the latest games, you have the same kind of gameplay that these classics provide.esp

Yes, the classic games are a good way to start. These games are the kind that zzt was intended for, and any advanced modern game is just a more complicated setup of the traditional ish.

Of course, this doesn't answer the original question at all.

I remember trying to get afew people to get into ZZT and this site. But once they saw ZZT and its graphics they just bummed out, then I thought to show them Frost and they said that looked even more crappy. All the games I showed them were Burger Joint, Frost, and ESP. I think they liked ESP at first, but once they saw how you still had to play as a smiley face they instantly told me I was an idiot for ever showing them such crappy games. =(

There all X-Box fans so you just might as well expect that reaction I guess.

If people find Frost's graphics to be crappy then they need to play more ZZT games. The only graphics better than Frost's would be Frost 2's WHICH I HAVE AND YOU DON'T.
