Hi everybody!

Post by 513 »

Hi everyone. My name is Snake, I am 16 years of age and I have decided to finally start a SERIOUS ZZT 'career'. I have worked with ZZT in the past, but never had the patience to finish my projects. Now I want to start making (and FINISHING!) my own games. But I decided to ask you guys for suggestions what to do first. I found this cool lil' website (well, little might not be the right word) and downloaded ZZT, the STK and some various toolkits compiled into a few files. What should I do next?

Any ideas for games to be made would be most welcome!

If you're Tyrannous, for the umpteenth time, please, please go away. Really.

If not, hi! Once you've got ZZT, STK, and a few toolkits (I suspect you mean you've downloaded the Z-Files), some good things to check out might be Chronos' and Mystical Winds' respective encyclopaedias, both of which can be found on the Utilities page.

You might also like to download a more advanced editor, like ZZTAE or KevEdit, but many (including myself) will advise you to at least familiarise yourself with the classic editor before you do so. Personally, I prefer KevEdit.

I don't know how many other ZZT games you've played, but if you haven't already, check out the Game of the Month page, and the (still under development) Featured Games page. You should also download and play at least a few games by all of the following authors:

Anthony Testa/Tony Testa/BlueMagus
Chase Bramlage Funk's going to kill me. <:(
clysm
drac0
Hercules
Hydra
John W. Wells (musician)
tucan
WiL
Zenith Nadir

Some good contemporary active ZZTers (not including Zenith Nadir, who has recently made a comeback) include:

Commodore
Dr. Dos
My Liver Hurtz
phunk
Quantum P.
Ryan Ferneau
Zandor 12
Zephyr

I've probably forgotten quite a few people, but those are the ones that come to mind.

If you'd like to see what's been churned out in recent months, since GotM died, I've been running a monthly award called MadTom's Pick since June last year which might give you an impression of the standards these days.

If you have any questions, I basically live around here, so feel free to private message me if you have anything I can help you with. Have fun!

Thanks for the help, MadTom. I downloaded ZZTAE as you suggested and it rocks!

I tried out KevEdit earlier, but I didn't like it that much.

So far I've only played some VERY old ZZT games (I believe they date back to the humble beginning of ZZT...) and the excellent 'Burglar!'. But I'll try some of the suggestions your posted.

I'm excited to be part of such a colorful community, as well as seeing how ZZT has grown since its great debue back in good ol' 1991 (actually I hadn't discovered it till about 1997 or something...).

By the way, wicked avatar there :D

Hi Snake. I am MLH. Or Hurtz/Hertz/Liver, whatever you want to call me. You wouldn't know of me since I am a relatively new to the community.
I did!--I did!--You're quicker than your friend... Now for a handful of guilders I happen to have a private and uncut performance of The Rape of the Sabine Women-or rather woman, or rather Alfred--. Get your skirt on, Alfred--
