im nadir :D sometimes, i draw things

Post by Zenith Nadir »

while i have the ability, i'm often less than diligent about putting my talents to good use. at the end of january i told myself i'd draw at least one thing a week; so far i have kept to this. i've decided that now i have a good body of stuff i'll put it somewhere for critique, because it's good to get feedback once in a while.

i've sent some of these to random people/posted them in random places around the internet, but it's good to have them in one place so everyone can see them, i think!

http://zzt.org/nadir/scans/ furry xd lol hurrr

notes on the preceding:

* wasser.jpg is not a new picture, i drew it last year but i only scanned it last week
* catshepsut.jpg and salute.jpg were both pics i drew for t-shirts last year. only the former actually made it onto one though, i got cold feet about using the other one. as you can probably tell, the girl in that picture is a human version of henna, the skunk who pops up in a few of the other pics.
* peoplediecompound.jpg is the album cover i drew for burstroc. i still like it a lot so i included it in the directory.
* sue3.jpg is that one pic of sue from cave story i used a cropped version of as an avatar for a while. it is not a new picture, but i crappily added toes to her feet with photoshop. i know it's not very good.

for those of you who don't know about it, the animal people in the majority of the pics are characters in the little toybox i've got going. i CAN draw people! i'm just concentrating on them for the most part.

anyway i'm throwing this out here and i'll post whenever i scan a new drawing.

Nice pictures. What do you use to do the majority of the drawing?

pencil, pens and paper. pencil is a mechanical pencil with a 0.5mm nib, paper is anything i can get my hands on, and i have five different pens for linework- 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.8mm. for small dark areas, i use a generic black felt tip pen, for larger dark areas (eg. mammoth.jpg) i use an ink pot and paintbrush.

i may retouch the pics a little in photoshop (i always increase the contrast because my scans always look a teensy bit greyed) but that's pretty much it. any colouring is done in photoshop.

All of these are good! But you knew that.

Have you heard of Adobe Streamline, by the way?

what's one of those

tttppp that was horrible.

oh and i probably should mention that i've only had the equipment setup listed above for the last few weeks, i only got those pens at the start of the month hence why the inking on the martinalucca.jpg is kind of messy (i was using a really cheap, shitty pen). also, all pens i use for drawing ever are gel pens. they're always winners!

It's one of several methods to turn scanned line art into vector-based drawings (eg .AI). If you made the next few drawings without your shading and scanned them, I think it could work really well.

Scott Ramsoomair of VGCats uses it, just as an example.

These are really good drawings but they seem really cartoonish (i.e. big eyes and such). Do you have any interest in drawing stuff from a realistic perspective? Do you have any examples of such drawings? Just curious.

if i wanted realism, i'd look out of a window!

i probably should take some kind of art course at some point though, widen my horizons, maybe do some life drawing (omg naked people :o). currently i'm pretty much completely self-taught, the last time i took an art class was when i was doing it in school aged 16 and i didn't know what the hell i was doing, and was too arrogant and shiftless to listen to anyone else's suggestions.
