Respite II (Slightly spoily)
Respite II (Slightly spoily)
'Respite', (res-pee-tay), the Sophistic word for 'rest', in Sophistic longhand.
I intend to finish this during the semester break, perhaps working on it a little while staying with BoonoB. Part of the reason it's taken so long is that I'm working on it in tandem with the third part of the series, which is probably going to need three files, and which I expect to be my magnum opus (and also, sadly, swan song) for ZZT.
I'm attempting to weave a bit more puzzle work into this game than in its predecessor and I'm making the graphics a bit tidier. Music also features extensively. I've now learned my lesson well regarding my ability with lyrics, so the title music has none.
It's very story-intensive, and a total of five important new characters are introduced - three of whom can be seen in the last screenshot - but I've minimised reading and plot infusion for those who don't like it, which I gather is most of us. The game should still be very playable even if one has no interest at all in the backstory, although I hope that may be its recommending asset.
I have a site I keep for the series here. The day I release the game I'll update the relevant sections of the site - at the moment only Castor's and Medana's character profiles are up, for example.
I've got three beta-testers: Dr. Dos, nps, and BoonoB. I don't think I'll need any more but if you're interested please do volunteer in case I change my mind.

:( Saddening. But all in all you will have (already have) a great library of games. So much for that Burglar sequel.MaðTom wrote:which I expect to be my magnum opus (and also, sadly, swan song) for ZZT.
This I approve of, especially if the game is as focused on dungeon crawling as the first one was. Puzzles in those sorts of games are few and far between. But it does look like you've got some outside action judging by that one pic.MaðTom wrote:I'm attempting to weave a bit more puzzle work into this game than in its predecessor
I think so long as you make a good game with a worth while story, reading will not be a problem. And as always you could cover a lot of ground in the TXT.MaðTom wrote:It's very story-intensive, and a total of five important new characters are introduced - three of whom can be seen in the last screenshot - but I've minimised reading and plot infusion for those who don't like it, which I gather is most of us.
Looks excellent, looking forward to it.

I got a little further than this, but not much. If I'd written the sequel for Burglar! out back when I'd made it, it would have worked. It's hard to get back in the same mindset I had when I was fourteen years old - even reading old LJ entries from that period is kind of spooky.
