Slightly technical question

Post by Kjorteo »

ZZT looks horrifically ugly in windowed mode. Compare (links go to screenshots:)

<a href="http://www.blazeshadow.net/kjorteo//mis ... KevEdit is good to me. It does a perfect impression of how the tiles are actually supposed to look. Fullscreen looks just like a bigger version of this, and everything looks great. My guess is that this is because KevEdit is a real program.

ZZT makes me cry. Also, not shown because I can't get a screenshot of fullscreen mode, the fullscreen smileys look slightly off...their grin is more of a :) than a :D and they just look wrong somehow. My guess is that this is because it is Windows XP trying to run a DOS game.

So...would anyone happen to know how to make ZZT render things properly? I'm sure there has to be a setting somewhere, or maybe at least one person has written a utility of some sort by now.

(Edited to fix spelling and stuff)

Also, I think I found a bug in kev edit, it wont let me use the background colours....I think it may be beacuse its been in window mode but Im not sure, I'll see if it works in full screen.)

Heck! ZZT under XP looks great compared to it under ME! In ME full screened the smiley looked like this:

And the walls didn't even match up correctly, everything looked like crap! It would only look right if it was windowed in a small size, it annoyed me so much that it was one of the many reason for me fully leaving ZZT. I can live with XP full screen font but still would perfer the old DOS font...

Wait, does KevEdit play games? I thought it was just an editor (It was just getting started 'round the time that I left).

It's an editor, but I think you can test games with it. I don't know, seeing as how I use(d) ZZTAE.

KevEdit's testing feature is basically launching ZZT to try to run your world, thus the ugliness of Windows-emulated ZZT still applies. (Also, for whatever reason, the filename/world name bug that Cronos' ZZT Encyclopedia mentions also takes effect when you use KevEdit to run ZZT this way.)

And yes, XP's ZZT font is a vast improvement over ME's, but I would like some sort of patch or utility or something to use the actual original DOS font so it doesn't look all wrong.

I use an old 486 for zzt, so i have no problems with full screen and all that crap. I uploaded ZZT to a newer computer, then after playing for 20 minutes, deleted it again. Pathetic on newer computers it is.

I'm pretty sure kevedit loads its own font(old dos), which is why it looks different than newer window's versions.
