Thanks for all the suggestions! I wouldn't be able to make the game as good as I'd want without them.

I've improved the texture of the houses as well as make a distinction between the group of two on the left. The overall progress of the game is coming at a somewhat steady rate, around one board per day, though I hope to increase that amount. I might get done this game by Summer (maybe sooner) if I continue at this pace.

And on another note, I was clearing out my old PC before installing Windows 98 and found an old ZZT game I started to make some time ago called "Catacombs". I haven't really looked at it yet, but may decide to finish it and upload it.

Yeah, I'd recommend to use ZBitmap to help make realistic shapes and shading in ZZT from normal images. Though I don't really like how the colors turn out from some images, so would recommend using those as a guide if you feel that way.

And I do use a lot of vomit shading when a different kind would be better. =(
Like Jur said, It'd help to experiment...

Edit: 2nd page get

Also here's a screen of your house, to show the way I've shaded differently:

ZBMP lets you import an image into ZZT and make the player think they need glasses because it's so blurry.

Most ZZTers already have glasses! Because they are nerds! I'm looking at you, gingermuffins!

If you make a sequel to this, it should be called abandon "ed" edition.

I hate to post screenshots for every little thing I do, but this is the last one until I do something completely new to the game. Here's the final for the first outside board to this point:

And what the hell, here's the board afterwards:

I'll post again when I actually do something major to the game.

Shadow Mage: I'll look into it.

Have you seen this film?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089869/
It has a similar theme, not a bad film in a "cheap 80s sci fi" sort of way. Watching it might give you some ideas for your game/inspire you in some way.

Fun fact: I clicked this thread and viewed it from the OP, and thought "haha is this a ripoff of The Quiet Earth" before realizing how old the thread was.

The graphic style in the screenshots is neat. The black border around absolutely everything gives it a kind of...like, ZZT equivalent to cel-shaded look, which I think is a cool effect.
"You're alive," said the maker, and smiled at the aardvark.

<gbelo> Wanna yiff.
<Kjorteo> yes
<gbelo> No no no.
