What do you listen to when you ZZT?

Post by Mooseka »

The topic says it all. What kind of music do you usually listen to when you make games? For me it's generally industrial stuff, or classical. It gets me in the mood to program =(

When you used to cut as well.

I've started listening to Wolfsheim now, but usually it's just whatever's on my playlist.

I don't usually listen to music too much when ZZTing, really.

I find the music I do listen to is dependent on the kind of game I'm working on, and (to a small extent) vice-versa. For my work on the Respite trilogy I've been listening to some heavy metal and alternative rock. For my Weekend of ZZT entry Ara, for some reason, I had Leonard Cohen's Greatest Hits, a classical choral collection, and Enigma's MCMXC a.D. on loop. Burglar! was built on Led Zeppelin, and (virtually) Led Zeppelin alone. Surreal stuff, and lazy drawings or boards that I don't release, are usually accompanied by progressive rock.

So, uh, it varies a lot!

It depends on the tone of the game. Listening to the right kind of music when programming can profoundly affect the outcome.

When making Frost 1, I listened to Moose's "Return to the Ocean" mp3s, as well as Smashing Pumpkins, Wolfsheim and Placebo which perhaps affected the graphics.

For psyche I listened to a lot of Tool and KMFDM. And some other stuff, I don't remember all that well (it was a long time ago) but I left a list in the credits.

For Frost 2 (well, when I work on it, ie. not lately) I've been listening to a whole lot of industrial and ambient trance (eg. Front Line Assembly, Prodigy, KMFDM) to get the "inner-city" feel.

Right now, I'm listening to Wumpscut. They are gothic industrial dance and very good.

This is FSFunky dancing to Wumpscut;

Icabod: I just listen to whatever's on the radio.

Diego: Music is for people with ears. Even though I have ears, but that's not the point.

I always thought it was really funny that in Quill, you could hear WiL's ZZT rendition of 'My Heart Will Go On' as you worked.
