ZZT is public domain software and therefor may be freely distributed
without any consequence. zlaunch and the many other goodies that come
with ZZT Under Windows are distributed under the GNU General Public
License. Though I have gone to great pains to make ZZTUWin foolproof,
I cannot ensure the safety of your data. NO WARRANTY IS PROVIDED.

********* What is ZZT? **********************************************
The consise bitman's dictionary defines ZZT as follows:

ZZT - A massively powerful game creation system whereby any person may
freely create and distribute his or her own interactive worlds with the
greatest of ease.

Countless worlds have been created for ZZT which vary in genre, style,
purpose, and unfortunately, quality. With the simplicity of ZZT,
almost anything can be created.

******** What is ZZT Under Windows? **********************************
The office suite of ZZT, ZZTUWin allows ZZT worlds to be categorized
into separate folders, starts gameplay at the title screen, allows for
an extended help system, improves thieving of screen shots, and
includes countless other goodies.

******** Installation ************************************************
Install ZZTUWin to it's own folder by running the included setup.exe
program (if you haven't started already).

******** Usage *******************************************************
Once installed, simply double click on any ZZT world to open that
world in ZZT.

******** Uninstallation **********************************************
Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel may be used to uninstall
ZZTUWin. Or, if you created a program group, run the uninstaller
from there.

******** Virtual keystrokes ******************************************
Virtual keystrokes automatically bring ZZT directly to the title
screen by entering the initial configuration information for you. The
default is kc<ENTER>, which selects keyboard, colour, and presses
enter to close the obsolete registration information dialog. See the
files default.zln and zlaunch.txt to change this behavior.

******** Icons and Cursors *******************************************
The icons and cursors are included just for fun. If you would like to
contribute your own icon set or cursors for use as an install option,
send me an email.

******** Screen Thief *******************************************
Screen thieves never had it so good. The latest freeware version of
Villa Software's Screen Thief (2.01) has been included in ZZT Under
Windows. Simply select Screen Thief as an install option and it will
be added to the right-click menu for ZZT worlds. Simply press
ALT-CTRL-T at any time and a screen shot will be generated in the
current directory.

Unfortunately, Screen Thief no longer supports the GIF file format
for legal reasons (i.e. Valla doesn't want to pay royalties for
something generating no revenue). If you really want GIF support
either install an old shareware version or get a good conversion
program. To install a different version of screen thief, copy
st.exe into the "st" subfolder of whichever folder ZZTUWin is
installed in.

PLEASE NOTE: Some versions of Windows get the notion that Screen
Thief must run in MS-DOS mode to function properly. This is not
true, so always respond "no" to such dialogs when using ZZTUWin. The
shareware version exhibits similar behavior only when virtual
keystrokes are used to avert the "register me" screens that pop up
when ST is run. If anyone finds a remedy, please notify me.

******** KevEdit support *********************************************
KevEdit support adds an association for KevEdit to ZZT Worlds and
Saved Games. For this feature to be very useful, install KevEdit into
the same folder as ZZTUWin.

******** Help System Support *****************************************
Extended help systems are fully supported in ZZTUWin. The most recent
version of Chronos's ZZTWeb has been included as an install option
to demonstrate the power of this feature. To install your own custom
help files or another extended help library, simply drop everything
into the "docs" folder in the ZZTUWin installation folder.

******** Standard Font Enforcement ***********************************
Some computers require ZZFONT.COM to be run before ZZT for the proper
font to be used. ZZTUWin supports this as an installation option for
such situtations. However, users must press CTRL-C whenever zzt is
exited to unload the font TSR. Only activate this feature if
absolutely necessary.

******** The Ultimate Installation ***********************************
To make the most of your ZZT experience, install ZZTUWin to the
default folder (in Program Files) with all the goodies installed
(excepting Standard Font Enforcement unless you need it) and unzip
KevEdit into the same folder.

When you download ZZT Worlds, treat them as documents, storing them in
the My Documents folder or in folders on the desktop (your
preference). Organize them and categorize them, spreading them out
across as many folders as you like. Don't put them in the ZZTUWin
folder or you'll just end up with a hopeless mess.

Also, there is no longer any need to leave zzt.dat files anywhere on
your hard-drive except in the zztuwin folder. The zlaunch copies and
removes zzt.dat and any help files on demand. Existing zzt.dat files
will not interfere with ZZTUWin (after several hours of coding, btw),
but I would suggest that you just chuck them for aesthetic reasons
anyway.

********* If it Crashes! *********************************************
If ZZT crashes, and thereby the zlaunch with it, a number of files
may be left in the current folder. Simply play the same world again
(or another in the same folder) and everything will be cleaned up.
Try not to disturb anything in the meantime, though.

********* The source, please? ****************************************
Email me at <bitman@users.sf.net> and I'll send along the source code.
ZZTUWin is released under the GNU General Public License. See
copying.txt for more information.

******** How it works ************************************************
ZZTUWin associates ZZT Worlds with a small DOS program called zlaunch,
which changes to the world's folder, puts a copy of zzt.dat and any
necessary .hlp files there, and launches zzt. The zlaunch is fully
configurable. See zlaunch.txt for more information.
