What's your favorite Roguelike? I really have to say that I prefer Rogue to all of them! I like it's simplicity, and it's the only one that I can beat rather easily.
And I made my own roguelike once, too! But it sucked and you'll probably never get to see it. Clecky has the source. Ask him for it if you want it. It's in QBasic. =(

Why the hell is TOME listed and not Angband? TOME is one of my least favorite of the umpteen thousand Angband variants.

ADOM because I'm too lazy to learn another set of overly complex controls!
"F - WIPE FACE"
then I think E is to CLEAN YOUR EARS
+3+2 blessed Q-tips of order!

I'm rather fond of Crawl and Moria, but I haven't played ADOM and NetHack enough to truly give a vote.

I've never played any of them. What are they like? Are they 2D or 3D? Do you get a gun, a sword, or both?

Well, rogue is a LOT like zzt. It uses a smilie who walks around through rooms and fights various monsters. The monsters are Capital letters that are the first letter of their name. (eg. R = rattlesnake) To beat a level you have to wander throughout the board until you find the exit. The catch is that you don't see where the rooms are or how big they are. A room appears on a map when you enter it from a connecting path. confused yet? Maybe I'll find some screenshots.

Oh, so it's ZZT-like, or maybe Kroz-like.

Ryan, rogue was the first non-text-adventure game(Namely Zork). It's top down view of a dungeon or area with one character. Usually there is no continue feature. Many things about rogue-like games are still the same, in particular, randomly generated dungeons and items like in diablo. You might get away with calling diablo a rogue-like although typically the games are initiative/ turn-based. Basically the appeal is the vast variation in characters/races/classes and the replay value due to the random dungeons.
