I thought not eating pork thing was based on not eating animals with a certain type of trotter.

That's how they were distinguished, but it is a fact that pork spoils rather quickly in that climate, and spoiled food is really not that great for, contrary to what Betrayal at Krondor may teach you.

**And before someone claims the Bible must be a joke, the Hebrews considered insects like grasshoppers to have 4 legs for walking and 2 structurally different appendages for jumping. Don't ask me why they made the distinction.
