- Aims for fastest time
- Takes damage to save time
- Abuses programming errors in the game
- Genre: Adventure
Presenting the first ever speedrun of a ZZT game.
It turns out there's a dosbox for the speedrunners on tasvideos.org. Last summer when I finally beat Town I found a trick to skip a section and felt like one of those fancy speedrunners. I wanted to do a speedrun then but dosbox's natural avi recording makes my computer crawl, and using camtasia only records at less than 1fps.
So I found this dosbox which just records key input.
To view the video
1. Download it
2. Extract to a folder (ideally C:\townspeed)
2b. If you extract it elsewhere follow these steps:
2c. Rename dosbox.conf dosbox.txt
2d. At the end of the file where it has the line mount C C:\townspeed replace it with mount C "directory" whever you extracted it.
3. Run dosbox.exe
4. It will appear to have frozen, this is because the emulator automatically pauses itself so you don't waste frames. Press F4 to unpause the emulator and the movie will begin to play itself.
This run could easily be improved with things like planning. My only planning was a little piece of paper with the bank combination and jazz man puzzle solutions. It would also be improved if dosbox didn't suck with ZZT making the player handle like a horrible truck.
I think you'll enjoy the ending too, it was very tense.
Also I really fucked up in the mixer and the room with the purple key where you use bombs and objects throw stars.
