Classic Literature -> Communism: NO, SERIOUSLY

Post by Schroedingers Cat »

In the story, "Gulliver's Travels," Jonathan Swift uses satire for a variety of purposes to further suit is political needs. As an aspiring communist dictator, Swift often makes a mockery of some of the more precious things in life- like sugar and spice and everything nice. For example, in the first part of the story, Gulliver finds himself as a giant among the tiny people of Lilliput. The Lilliputians are representitive of the regular, average Joe, and Gulliver is the egotistical meglomaniac dictator of Great Britain. This, of course, makes the Lilliputians Very Angry and so they decide to overthrow him. They succeed, and Gulliver is rendered armless, legless, eyeless, hearless, and tongueless. Naturally, Gulliver also becomes Very Angry and decides to completely obliverate the Lilliputian kingdom. Rolling down the street, Gulliver becomes a menace to society. Unfortunately for the Lilliputians, their armies are no match for the Rolling Mass of Thunderous Fury, and their entire civilization is left in flaming ruins. Thus Swift's belief in the superiority of a Communist Dictatorship is made evident to the reader. Thankfully, Swift died a poor and broken man, heavily addicted to opium, and lived out the rest of his days as a poet, writing poems such as, "The Raven," and, "The Star-Spangled Banner."

As for proof, this post is like God. Without faith it is nothing. Just take my word for it. In another time, in another place, it might be real.

Seriously though, I was hoping for an semi-intelligent debate about secret messages within books and artwork, like the Da Vinci Code or something. :hmmmm:

IF I RECALL CORRECTLY (and its been about 5 years since ive read this book), gulliver and the lilliputians make peace before his departure. he puts out a fire with his pee! so capitalism and communism can live in harmony if one pees on the other? i guess it makes sense in a stupid way.

also, if gulliver is the evil imperalist who destroys all of the lilliputariat's stuff, wouldn't that mean he's saying that capitalism/imperialism/whatever is better? or is it moral-wise. frankly i think gulliver responded pretty realistically to waking up being tied up by a bunch of tiny people.

what do you make of the giant women putting gulliver in their bras for stimulation?

How would you react if you had your city destroyed by Thunderous Fury? I know I would make peace with a force of that much power...
I agree with you, if an army of tiny people tied me down, I too would exact vengence upon their puny cities.
Gulliver pissed upon the flaming ruins not to put out the fires, as Swift would have the common aristocracy believe, but to disrespect the Lilliputians. Remember, Gulliver is representitive of a Communist dictatorship. Dictators are DICKS. Remember this.

As for the stimulation, remember that that happened AFTER he got a sex change. [S]He was actually a spy for Mother Russia and seduced the giant women with his superior nipple-raping skills, making another ally for Soviet Russia. Remember, there is a very fine line between Socialism and Communism, and the Brobdingnags were already Socialists...

right here!

My knowledge of Gulliver's travels is limited to that tv special with ted danson which I didn't see much of but after reading this topic I must say this story is a little vulgar for CBS

communist or not, Swift's one of the finer writers there ever was! Plus I'm not sure how communist you can be when you're a priest. But the most socialist portion of the book was the horses, not the liliputians at all. The first two parts of the book were stabs at the parliment and the king.

Are you implying that Christianity and Communism are mutually exclusive?

Are you implying his post was made in all seriousness?

Because if you are, there are a lot more just plain incorrect things to be pointed out.

Yes. No "good" Communist would be a Christian.

That's different than having socialist values though.
