Which editor to use for standard ZZT?

KevEdit or ZZTAE? I assume the two are largely similar, so what's the marginal advantage of each?

Kevedit has copy/paste.
End of discussion.

Are there any disadvantages to using KevEdit? Or anything at all I'd want to use the regular editor for?

Yeah, KevEdit totally outstrips ZZTAE. CyQ lost interest in the latter, while bitman kept developing KevEdit.
Newest version of KevEdit (0.5.1) can be screwy with the protected mode under DOS. Some people (myself included) noted things like errors when pressing 'B' for board information.
I use 0.5.1's beta, instead, which bitman gave me about a year ago. It's pretty much a perfect KevEdit.

One thing I've noticed in KevEdit is that there are fewer options for background colors than foreground; What's the nature of this limitation? Maybe it's just me, but I don't rmeember that being the case with toolkits in the olden days.

DOS normally interprets a character with a high-intensity background as a blinking character. If you have
blinkx loaded, however, it'll appear as having a bright background.
(also you can press k in kevedit to get a color selection box)
also you may want to back up your game regularly if using kevedit; even the latest version has (extremely rarely) crashed while saving on me. it only seemed to happen if i'd been moving around or importing a lot of boards

KevEdit. I don't think that I've even touched ZZTAE.

Here's the beta MadTom was talking about:
http://bitman.freeshell.org/download/ke ... .5.1-beta/
We fixed a bunch of pretty obvious bugs, but there were no new features so I never could motivate Kev to make an official release out of it.

I take it back, Kev did finally release 0.5.1 last year. Seems he added DosBox support in Linux too... Don't know what that's all about.

It's a limitation of ZZT, not KevEdit

DEFINETELY KevEdit. It's much easier to do everything, and it looks a bit nicer than ZZTAE and the regular editor.

j_hunter: As quiet as this forum usually is, it's bad form to revive a thread that's been abandoned for some months.
Go introduce yourself, by the way:
