Voice Acting, and the Legend of Zelda

I'll make it short, and sweet.

I want to know what you guys think about voice acting in video games.
Good, bad. Horrid to this point, but you like the idea?

This has come to mind recently with the talk of voice acting being included in the Legend of Zelda series. It's been talked about since Ocarina of Time, but besides grunts and groans.. never used. Rumor was spreading like wild-fire that the new GCN version would include such, but it's been shot down.

Nintendo has shown something of an interest in using voice rec. with their new Zelda DS game though, and thoughts are that maybe the majority of the gameplay will revolve around talking into the mic. on the DS.

At any rate, I'm lacking in information anyways.. and I'm too lazy to dig up real details. Vote away, and flame me.

Most of the time the voice acting in video games is pretty bad. There are a few games with excellent acting, but for the most part it's pretty terrible. Also it makes skipping dialogue tougher.

System Shock 2 had excellent voice acting. The Lucas Arts adventure games had good voice acting too.

Crispin Freeman is a really good voice actor and he's in the .hack games.

I bolded his name because he was the hero of my adolescent times.

I think voice acting is helpful when it's done well..

However, if voice over would be included with Zelda, it had better be awesome, because the bar for quality in Zelda-series is set pretty high.

Voice acting is best when it's good (Thousand Arms) and when it's so bad it's awesome (Star Ocean II). Taking the good with the bad (Valkyrie Profile) can be fair, if there's an easy way to avoid the bad like there is in that game.

Mediocre voice acting scripts are the worst though. For instance, I got this Polish SRPG called Odium a long time ago, and the voice acting was fair but the script was deplorable. I mean, how many times must they start a battle going "OHHHHHH GOD WHAT IS IT KILLLLLL ITTTTTTTTT AAAAAAAAAAAHG!"? Apparently about fifteen!

that picture gave me a boner, you shithead

voice acting in video games? well i've only played a handful with that and they were all point and click types

i replayed the first two legend of kyrandia games lately; the first one sucks because you spend 3/4 of the game lost in a forest or cave, or finding stuff to put into things and the voice acting is lame so i turned it off after about three minutes

kyrandia 2: hand of fate is an entirely different kettle of fish, as it is super awesome and the voice acting is great. also zanthia is a much stronger protagonist than that dumbass brandon. woh this game woz ard i give it five stars

and eric idle as rincewind in the first discworld game wasn't half bad

too bad that game had the most obscure puzzle solutions ever though, you needed a walkthrough to have any fun at all with it

I think voice acting, if done well, really adds to the game. These days games almost look like movies, they should sound like them too. Voice acting in Zelda would be awesome, as long as Link didn't talk much. He's really not supposed to talk.

Link seems to suffer the fate of many a video game heros, he doesn't speak.
