Rogue is pretty different from most Roguelikes, strangely enough. In fact, a lot of the features that normally define a Roguelike are not present in Rogue. Strange, but true. :D

What features other than permanent death, random dungeons, random items and random monsters define a roguelike? Actually the similarities between ZZT and Rogue are really
small but, uhh...in some way they are alike. FOR SOME REASON THERE IS A MYSTICAL CONNECTION BETWEEN THEM.
