Sorry for reviving an old thread, but I have something to add.
I know someone IRL who is very similar to zzo38 in that he's a really smart guy but simply cannot spell. He couldn't read or write at all halfway through elementary school, so he was put on Hooked On Phonics or something similar. Now, he spells almost everything just how it sounds without any further rules.
Now it's possible that in an environment that doesn't quite use English but uses words, like in programming, there is a different mindset and the rules are changed, so that it's easier to memorize spellings of words. If this is the case, it could explain zzo38's situation.
"Hukd on fonics werkd fer me!"

Sounds like Einstein to me.
Actually, you may have a point there, NB. When I was around 8 and just learning zzt, I learned how to spell "breakable" and "ricochet" from zzt. Of course, it's been a while since I've use #put ricochet or something, so it hasn't really come to much use.
English is a hard language to learn how to spell. Mostly because all the "rules" or "laws" of spelling have exceptions, and then there's all the words we borrowed from other languages. You have to memorize practically every word. utherwyz yu cuud just spel it foenetiklee, wr invi:t sum wey it wuud werk fwΠyuw.
