. . . .!. . . .
Sn0rb asked me about the results in the reactivation email he sent me, so I'm gathering that there's still some interest.

i want the results because i could've told you a week after the contest that there was a 100% chance of kjorteo winning.

All right. As long as none of the other judges are contesting the decision I'll write up a list of proper scores soon. Sorry, guys.
Ando doesn't want his scored so I won't.
Kjorteo, do you want to host the next contest?

Actually, I played that just yesterday after reading the thread you referred to in the 'lol@Scorch' #Rawr thread. It was pretty silly.Ando wrote:Joke entries are really entertaining to make, though. Did anyone here get a hold of my ROSA PARKS game a few months back? It was on DigitalMZX for a while.

That depends entirely on how much time and work is involved, but I'm leaning no. I'm an extremely busy guy with weaving and crap, otherwise I would have finished Adventure of Sam by now. Any #rawr regulars have noticed that I'm only even hanging out in the channel like once or twice a week. And if I had the free time necessary to host a contest, I have an infinitely long list of projects to work on should I ever be able to steal a second, so I'd probably dedicate it to any of those instead.
I mean, the odds of me even competing in the next contest aren't very high as it stands right now, unless something changes to free up my schedule by the time you actually find someone.

"You're alive," said the maker, and smiled at the aardvark.
<Kjorteo> "yiff"
<gbelo> Wanna yiff.

<gbelo> No no no.

All right, here we are, in the order they appear in the zip file:
SKC Soft - One Day
A sketchy title screen with a board saving error. Not a good start. Very buggy, with a pretty unconvincing "the rest is up to your imagination" conclusion. Its main virtue is it's one of the better submissions in terms of adherence to the topic.
4/10
bummy/Viovis - Chaos in the Bummy 6004
Nice title screen, but otherwise pretty much "what the hell?"
2/10
Commodore - (untitled)
Detailed, clever, pretty, funny ... and short. I laughed at the image of Commodore snorting lines. One of the best submissions, but there's not a lot of gameplay to be had, though.
7/10 - Third Place
groovytasticsam - Festo
Weird. Very weird. Boards and blocks lifted as toolkits and from Town of ZZT lose many points. Buggy and not very creative. It's drawn OK in places, though.
1/10 (Heavy penalties for plagiarism.)
Hazard - WTFness
The board saving error was a bad start. It's kind of a neat concept and I laughed at the "we will surely starve" / " :( " exchange. There's a worldmap and a couple of well-drawn boards, and an annoying forest maze. It ends with a deliberate runtime error which is more annoying than creative. It's still too brief for three days' work, but it's one of the longer entries all the same.
6/10
Zephyre Syx - Ultimate Illusion (Part 1)
Good graphics and title screen/intro boards, and a story with some sense of completeness. It's probably the game with the second most in-depth plot, but that isn't saying a whole lot, to be honest. Zephyre had a go at some music with limited success. It got a little banal towards the end and I lost interest, although the asteroid field engine was interesting. The game wasn't buggy at all, either, which is a definite plus.
7/10 - Second Place
Kjorteo - Colosseum
Here's the truly redeeming entry in the competition. Well-suited to the topic - he chose Authority. Kjorteo adapted an engine of his own devising to ZZT and pulled it off with RPG elements to make a fighting game with a basic plot and a twist at the ending. Effort was plainly put into what must have been reasonably complex programming, the graphics are fine, and attention has been paid to detail. Kjorteo also didn't fall into the trap of overcomplicating the engine, and a cursory readthrough of the instructions was enough to get the hang of it.
I found the real challenge of the game was allocating authority properly, choosing what to get and when. It took me a few tries to get past certain battles.
Very good. Graphical revision could have improved its appearance, and the game could have been extended both in length and plot development; but those are my only gripes.
9/10 - First Place
Nixon - Flee
Standard sidescroller fare with a slightly different method of approaching the topic. The engine was slightly buggy and was too easy. I did like the divergent paths - above land or underwater - near the middle of the sequence, that was kind of neat. The ending is somewhat abrupt. The graphics are very good - I really liked the animation of the bird on the first board.
7/10
ooF - Special Adventure
what
3/10
XNOG34 - MadTom smells
<:(
0/10
Snorb - Adventure 2-pack
Snorb either misinterpreted me as saying that he needed to make two games because of the two topics, or just decided to. Either way it's not exactly what I had in mind, but it's not in the rules or anything.
Regardless, the first game makes no sense (you can't leave your house) and consists of just cardboard cutout RPG character dialogue. The second was more interesting with some snappy writing in places but that didn't go anywhere either, and was just as buggy. Neither game is really complete.
Ambitious start without much substance.
2/10
TTTPPP - Court Bouillon
TTTPPP made a flashback style game involving a tale of abduction, murder, theft, and failing to pay taxes for a part-time job - carrying the notable penalty of life imprisonment. This was probably the game that held together with the choice of plot best, and engaged my interest . The graphics are mediocre to reasonable, and the tie-in with the topic wasn't sufficient.
6/10
Overall I get the impression that people weren't very enthusiastic about the competition this time round. In days gone by almost all of these entries could be reasonably expected in a 24HoZZT. I remember the first one had a lot of hype and of course Mooseka was in charge, which might account for the overall better quality of the submissions.
I'm sorry I left this for so long, it really didn't take me nearly as long as I thought it would. Thanks to all participants.
