No boo for text adventures. Oh no. In addition to being a ZZT and MZX fan, I am also a fan of the old text adventures. Inform is a wonderful program nowadays that I've had fun with creating my own text adventures. Oh, and Adam Cadre rules.

ZORK HAS NO GRAPHICS, I WOULD MUCH RATHER PLAY ADOM WITH THE MANY COLORS AND GRAHPICAL IMAGES
But seriously, Rogue isn't a very good example of a roguelike. It's so very simple, like, say, Town, whereas ADOM would be i don't know some other game like frost or psyche

all of the early zork games were really hard. Part of the reason the newer generation of gamers are turned off by older adventure games, is they don't know/want to use a pen and paper.

Yea, (When I was a wee lad) I finally learned from my father that you have to make a map of the game to get far.
"What?! A game that makes you think???! I just want to KILL!"

I'm one of the older generation of gamers and
I don't want to use a fucking pen and paper. I made the effort with the Zork games, but that was it.

So, how old do you have to be before you're one of the "older generation" of gamers?

Having to use a pencil and paper is what made Riven (and it's predicessor, Myst. But Riven was better. :D) so enjoyable for me, personally. And why I'm playing Silent Hill 3 with the puzzles on hard. (And dang, that Shakespear puzzle was a doozy right off the bat.)

I loved Myst.
No, really, it was excellent. If horrifically time wasting.
