so basically you're saying we should spam forums

money or not, you're an idiot
When does mass advertising become spamming? I guess we should keep it in game forums. But we could still post it in off-topic sections of other forums. Unlike spamming, it'll be posted only where it belongs.

Matthew Lesko is awesome. He can get you free money from the government and he wears a magical suit laden with question marks! They say he can see your dreams, and will make them real if he deems them sufficiently capitalist. He is also the 494th pokemon.

Also if I get on a game show I'll mention ZZT game-making as being one of my hobbies I guess? I bet I could get on Jeopardy if I tried for long enough, I'm decent with trivia.

That's so funny. "I like to make ZZT games." "Zee, zee tee games?" "Yeah, it's this 90s ascii-based Dos program..."

maybe if we changed the default member rank to something else we'd scare away less people (though it is probably a decent filter for idiocy)

I R NEW

But seriously, it saddens me that the ZZT community is dying. I've been away for a few years, and today I said, whatever happened to ZZT?

And here I am.

YAY

We're gonna have to believe that this is your first time here in order for this thread to feel successful.

People have broadband internet. And they don't buy a lot of bulky shareware cd-roms anymore.

The ZZT community used to be two largely obese men calling each other fatty. Now it's a skinny dude with no friends.

It's encouraging that some of the old guard remained. Goddammit, I should hunt down Hercules.

Wow, I forgot I posted this. Well, I remember z2 used to be listed on a lot of abandonware sites and then I imagine most of them died. I searched for game creation systems on google and the first site to come up was http://www.ambrosine.com/resource.html, which I remember used to list zzt. It doesn't anymore. And there could be more which have removed the zzt listing because the links that once hosted zzt sites no longer work.

EDIT: feel free to skip this. I was half-asleep when I wrote it. I only left it here because someone might be inspired by it (not likely).

Warning: Rant ahead. Continue at the risk of your own sanity. Like you have any left by now.

I have done this on many occasions, usually before showing someone a game I played/am working on. Many people don't show the same enthusiasm I do for it. I love this forum, because it unites me with people who enjoy ZZT for the same reasons I do.

Also: I've mentioned ZZT and been asked if I meant the band, ZZTop. I think we need to get some meme started that makes ZZT a known name, without stooping to spamming threads. I wonder how many people played Zero Wing after seeing some variant on All Your Base? Is there some scene in an early ZZT game that we could parody this way? It'd be best if it was in one of the originals, like Caves or City.

Or maybe we'll be more likely to get attention by posting on related sites. I found ZZT after the following topic-linking:
1. I searched for a dos-based Game Creation System.
2. I found the OHRRPGCE on dosgames.com.
3. I tried several times to make a game in the OHRRPGCE, to no avail.
4. I went back to dosgames and looked for another.
5. I found ZZT.
6. I played some of the games it came with, like Town and Caves.
7. I tried making a game with the built-in-editor, but got distracted.
8. I played several of the featured games on z2. At this point I began to discover the cameos, and was scared to approach them because many of them had apparently left and I was afraid to find out "we don't do that anymore" or be flamed ridiculously.
9. I tried several times to make a game on my own, but always lost interest.
10. I posted an idea to a forum on z2 about a game I would like to make.

That's how I got here. This all happened over the course of several years, and started because I had an interest that I searched for, hoping the internet was large enough that such a thing already existed. Most of this was in the late 90s, so I probably found ZZT just as it was starting to fade.

My challenge: develop a hilarious meme that somehow involves the phrase "ZZT" or "z2." References to furries and barney are fine. Famous names like TSENG and MadTom should probably be avoided. Local jokes like "ando is autistic" or SHORT SWORD should probably be avoided, although there might be some leeway here. The idea is to stick an idea into the back of people's minds and let it ferment until a few more people become curious enough to try to find it.

And we must make it easy to find, or some of those who search will forget the name and search for "ZZP" or "ZT" or "Ziti" or something like that. I would hate to finally go back to look for that neat thing I heard of once, only to find the name had evaded my memory, as Icehouse did so many years ago.

WE MUST SURVIVE! WE MUST MULTIPLY! WE MUST INVENT TELEPORTATION!

EDIT: you guys, you guys! We have a donor!
http://dev.c99.org/DreamZZT/wiki/DreamZZTDS

now, does anyone know what tools you need to get this onto a DS? ZZT on other platforms could save us, and I always wanted a pocket game system that could run ZZT.

Well, not always... but since I knew both ZZT and portable game systems existed.
