did you count while doing it, have a program counting for you, or did you just do some crazy math?

You could have a player clone in the corner with a couple of objects whose sole purpose would be to count how many times the arrow keys were pressed. Downside would be that it would take up at least 5 spaces that could be filled with gems!
Also, it's nice to see this kind of contest again! I'll take a stab at it if I have some time.

No you can't, objects arn't allowed. I had an idea, but I don't think it would work.

I'm just estimating, it would be pretty complicated to figure out the exact number. I'm pretty sure it's between 5 and 6 hundred thousand.

I know - I was thinking something like what Dr. Dos did, where there was a board with an automatic counting thingamajig in addition to the official board.

how long would 500000 key pushes take?

There's a dosbox with savestates and recording for speedruns that's never been used for a speedrun, but every time you press a key it lists it in that status window dosbox opens. You can probably paste that giant buffer into something and see how many lines it is.

If you worked pretty fast and either saved or didn't make mistakes, it would take about 29 hours, i think.
