Idea: The take-picture-of-self-every-day project was original and innovative when the first person did it, but the concept's tired now that all the other aspiring artists with digital cameras are jumping on the bandwagon. Stand out from the crowd by using playable ZZT boards instead of pictures! The end result is a game with more replay value, plus the format makes it easier to take more liberties with how your life is portrayed...

Um...I came up with the whole ZZT journal thing because I was ed off
at the guy we were living with and his stupid kids, and wanted a place to
vent. Not trusting to paper due to the fact that it's very easy to leave laying around, decided, "Hey, I know! I'll use ZZT! They're too stupid to
even turn the thing on, much less get past those annoying little ZZT 'locks'"! It works rather nicely. I even made it look halfway decent
by stealing boards from various games and using them. See, you start
out on Zenith's Mt. NMIAOW board, with passages leading to the year,
and as of version 2, an address book (no, I don't really know why I put
that in there either, but it's the phone booth board from ESP with a scroll
shaped object). Objects block you, and if you don't set a certain flag within 10 seconds, or if you try to ?zap, it #endgames on a loop. Spring has the Sword Minigame board from Frost sans objects. The journal
entries are represented by trees. All journal boards feature an invisible
object that checks to see if the flag is set. If not, #endgame. Summer
has the beach board from The Hauge, IIRC, and entries are shells. Autumn currently has the graveyard from MRWAIF, only with "unused" graves being white text to save a little space. Winter is Frost's Music Board, with MadTom colored "signs". It's a little inconvenient with space
restraints, but overall, it works rather well. If I can find a better medium,
I'll switch, but this ZZT journal is very organized and easy for me to edit,
so...yeah.

That or turning 13.

I remember thinking when I got into 7th grade after seeing how terrible high school sucked on tv (which never ever exaggerates) that I would keep a journal of the TERRIBLE TRUTH OF HIGHSCHOOL.

In ZZT so nobody could find it!

Except then the first day of highschool came and it wasn't really any different so I said fuck it. Except I didn't say the f word because I could get in trouble.

jazzy you should release these diaries to the world so that the rest of us can finally learn about how to make zzt diaries!

It would do us no good if he did! The diaries are guarded like an ancient temple, filled with booby traps and misleading corridors. Even if you could get past those, you'd still have to fight the Nazis for the treasures within...

I should find that Indiana Jones game Hydra made and play it again.

that game RULED

hydra's earlier work is some of the best zzting going

indiana jones, freak da cat and king's quest zzt... god, those games were awesome

sure, his later work was more accomplished, but it didn't have the same charm if you ask me. it was still good, just in a different way.

also i just reread jazzy's post and i think i understand it now. wasn't "mt. NMIAOW" an art board from ultra wack with mountains? it's been a while and i forget now.

dude needs to learn to paragraph properly. good paragraphing make your writing smile (a lesson i have to repeatedly drill into my students BLAHGH)

also, verbing weirds language. "paragraphing" what the fuck

I'm impressed. zamros can find just about *anything* to be homoerotic.
Good job zamros! :safe:
Oh. and happy 21st birthday, assuming your Slashnet profile is correct.

Yeah, I've heard that English is unique among most languages in that you can turn most nouns into verbs (although I don't think that I do that all too often).

...hey. You're right. I do need practice at paragraphing. I just started typing it and didn't really care too much. And like I said, the instant I find
something more useful than ZZT for this whole journaling business is the instant I switch to it. I truly don't see what the big deal is. LOLZ SOEMOEN
UZD ZZZT LOLZ!!11 Really now, come on. The thing is for my personal use, is it not?
I'm merely taking advantage of my limited resources and the ignorance of my family of all things computer and/or DOS related, and the fact that
entries are remarkably organized in this manner, as opposed to a long,
500kb text file or something.
The journaling is for putting my thoughts down and recording memorable
happenings. It's helped me to remember important things that I otherwise
would have forgot or discounted, as well as being a place where I can record my game ideas and such, such as the cast list for the "A Community Christmas Carol" that I still intend to finish some day in some form or another.
...And that's all I have to say.
