Hey, this is really cool. :)

I'll look for ways to use this in ZZT, and maybe even the upcoming WoZ!

Nice trick, gingermuffins. I always hated how the whole board would be non-visible when you set it as a dark board. However, people could use this to make something that puts more innovation into games. This'll add a lot to future ZZT games (as slow as they come =( ), I'm sure.

Dr. Dos started a ZUltimate entry.

I've started one for gingermuffins, too. It would be cool if he edited it to tell us a bit about himself.

I wonder... If we use this effect, would you like us to credit the use of the effect to you in our credits?
Meh, can't beleive how little I come to these forums now.

lol no credit needed

If it was something that took effort to produce, like a toolkit, then maybe i'd ask for credit, but it was discovered by acccident with no real effort on my part. Anyone could have figured it out.

(Wanna know how I found it out? I was playing that sidsid game by XOFACE or viovis that was recently uploaded. There's one board filled with torches and a centipede, and for some reason I typed ?+dark, and poof, most of the screen stayed up. If I hadn't been fooling around with that, i never would have discovered it.)

I'd like to see someone actually use it

I haven't tried it yet, but it should be possible to make routes appear on the board by hiding objects in the wall lining, and then making them eat the torches (or passages) when a flag is set. It would be a pain to set up, but it might look interesting if it opens up a long path. I'm sure there's more hassle than I'm thinking about right now, like you'd have to #put wall lining as the objects move forward or otherwise it will leave tears that the player can pass through, but just sayin'.

Anything other than a straight path would be torture to program, though. And I don't know how many bytes this would need.

Code: Select all

If making a path to the right, objects would have to add walls on the north and south as they go.
