Cell

You've found the Golden Bacon. Now, you have to leave this crazy place with it.

Every board is dark. You have light from your smartphone that will last 30 minutes.

Dark board screenshots are sort of poor at showing much, I can see why you chose to show text, but still carefully put some illuminated tiles at the edges. gingermuffin's effect is your friend. You don't have to go crazy with it, but even if you just decorate a few boards, it'll provide the player with some sort of orientation when they wander from room to room. I'm guessing it's mostly linked boards and not passages?

Anyway, the text hints at some craziness. Looking forward to it.

I'm making absolute sure that there are location references. You should be able to tell where you are easily. I like to use dark boards because it plays on the exploration element. These areas are not wide open spaces - you can always see a wall. Most rooms, if not all, will have objects in them that can help identify your location.

The whole game is going to play like a long item trade chain with silly characters. I really like the style of Knightt in his Stupid RPG games, but didn't like the RPG battles. This game should imitate elements of that style nicely.

I like the modern element. I think you can run with it a bit.
Complete darkness is unique and if done properly (ie: long torch cycles, pretty walls) it can provide the appropriate effect.

Glad to see you're finally making that game!
Keep us posted.

Think this is turning out well for never having actually done ZZT graphics.

Looks pretty fine! It had a real nice feeling of depth with the trees and the rocks, but I can't tell if that's a bridge or a road along the shore. If it's a bridge put a little land under the upper left part to show that it's in front of it.

I decided not to have every board dark. Just the first few boards.

I'm a fan of this particular style.
Since most of your boards are dark, you could go back and polish this later.
