I also should make something

Post by Stak »

So I was playing some ZZT games and it has rekindled my love of this old DOS GCS

I put together a rough inventory and clip/reload engine but I'm not sure what to do with it

At first I wanted to do some kind of psychological horror thing (mostly due to finally getting around to buying and completing Eternal Darkness) but the effect is kind of lost when translated to ASCII graphics

But maybe I'll do that anyway

Maybe I could make the walls bleed

Maybe

I am not sure yet

Sanity effects would be easy enough, just use a counter to represent it and occasionally attempt to take away a certain amount, and if it can't then trigger the effect

I should really come up with some scenarios though

eternal darkness (of the spotless mind) was a great game

i don't think you could really do a wide range of insanity effects in a zzt game though... and psychological horror relies on subtle tricks to unnerve the viewer, big chunky ansi graphics are not terribly subtle

of course, this is zzt, and making zzt games has always been about getting over limitations! i'm sure you can think of something, if you try hard enough

maybe you could do something to make the inventory randomly do weird shit in the scary parts, like maybe pop up at a random time without being called, or display something wrong when called, or trigger something nasty in a room, that'd be pretty freaky

or maybe it'd just be annoying... well, the insanity effects in eternal darkness could get pretty annoying, don't let that put you off!

Oh damn

The possibilities are endless now

Like your guy just got out of an encounter that left him particularly shaken and all of a sudden you're in TOWN.ZZT

Stuff like this would be infinitely easier to do in Megazeux but getting around ZZT's limitations are part of the fun

I'm still unsure as to whether there would be a sanity counter or if the effects would be triggered at pre-determined times. The counter might limit what I can pull off but pre-determined times would ruin any sort of replay value the game might have, and also might ruin the whole thing (imagine if something like the bathtub scene happened every so often)

Also I doubt anything like the bathtub scene is possible in ZZT at all

you know, i thought the bathtub scene was the least interesting part of eternal darkness and i don't understand why people get excited about it

my personal favourite part was, while playing in the cambodian temple as ellia, going into one of the corridors with the whirly blades, and i slowly started shrinking and the blades slowly started getting bigger, and then they all started to close in on me, and then suddenly i was back in the previous room and she was all AUUGGGHHH, FUCK

sadly, THAT is not reproducible in zzt

It doesn't have to be horror

I just think it would be neat to have a bunch of otherwise unrelated scenarios and tie them into one big overarching plot

parallel is interesting, but it's basically a series of unrelated vignettes. also it has that one scene (hilarious in retrospect given madtom's later obsessions) with the angels at the rock concert

maybe you could go for something more like wario ware, that'd take that particular model and make it pretty trippy
