The #endgame projects thread

Post by Ando »

Uh since I was accused of not really doing anything with this forum and since lemmer seemed to really fuck up the forum at the #endgame site I'm creating a sticky here where people can show off their projects as they are being created, and stuff. This is better than nothing, guys. Or if it's not, then at least I'm trying.

I'll upload pics of my entry soon enough. You guys can already go on ahead without me, if you so choose.

That looks pretty awesome.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do. At first I was going to make Aura RPG, then I was just going to do an Aura Challenge game, and then I got bored and made a very small town of zzt.

These all look great so far. Here's some of my screenshots, as promised.

Image

Minimalist title screen; probably needs improvement.

Image

A town in a desert world.

Image

A cold, artic world.

Anyways tell me what you all think!

Dr. Dos, that reminds me of that ZZT World in Subspace/Continuum that I made, which I usually post about it annually (not anymore becuase I got a router). It had a town of zzt map in which a team of ruffians hunts a team of players. I once had a game of 10 going. I hid in the invisomaze the whole time.

Ando, that's pretty cool, EXCEPT I CAN'T TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE "A" AND THE "R".

I am convinced most engines can be improved with the spacebar.

For example! The annoying as hell ?+i engine.

Wouldn't it be better if you just hit spacebar? It's not like it's hard to do.

So I made one! I replayed Out of Order recently and want to make an inventory adventure game so I will.

It would also be nice if these things were more like actual adventure games are you didn't just automatically USE GET TALK or LOOK depending on what things are.

So in my engine you can talk to coins and soda machines and try to pick up sad people.

You cycle through verbs with spacebar, I dubbed it TULIP after realizing i should have an objct show a letter based on what verb you're on and that you can spell TULIP with it.

Talk
Use
Look
Inventory (Inventory is actually a noun)
Pick up

When you cycle to inventory (the actual cycle order is LPUTI) the inventory pops up and acts like a normal ?+i game letting you look at your inventory, as long as you stay in inventory mode, touching an object will open your inventory to select an object to use on it.

Also you know how in a nice point and click adventure you move the mouse onto something and it's all LOOK AT WINDOW well so is this! Thanks to checking if you're in contact with a usable object it will display a verb based message such as TALK TO COIN or PICK UP COIN.

Now all I need is everything but an engine! I made a little test board where you pick up a coin, use it on a soda machine, and give the soda to an unhappy man whose wife is dead!

Dos the only possible course of action is to make a Monkey Island ripoff now

Imagine no +i engines
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man

But seriously, that sounds really neat, Dos. It reminds me a bit of jojoisjo's 4.

Ando, those screenshots look nice, and I like how the map of the frozen landscape came out. However, I have to agree with Jotz that the title screen is a bit hard to read.

Dr. Dos, how about just using Shift+direction for the commands? That way, you wouldn't have to cycle through the commands. Perhaps it could be called TILT: Talk, Inventory (which is pretty much like Use), Look, and Take. Each one is represented by one of the four directions.

Still working rather...... slowly on Rose Angel. =(

As soon as I actually get a screen or two done, I'll screencap it for y'all.

I considered that but USE and INVENTORY are very different things really.

Compare:

USE LEVER
USE MICROWAVE

with

USE LUBRICATION ON BIG LONG HARD LEVEL WITH NPS ENGRAVED ON IT
USE HAMSTER ON MICROWAVE

Which annoyed me because i kind of liked the idea of 4 directions for commands.

I don't think I'd use it because I really hate player clones, but yeah, awesome idea.

I'm using a +i inventory system in Spire, but the weapons engine is a lot simpler than in other engines I've used this time. I want to save space.

I have an odd feeling that a game with different weapons might have a problem with the player changing them with the same button as firing them.

Well, actually Sara only has melee weapons in Spire, but yeah, there's that too. And I don't think it's possible to set the engine up to distinguish between Shift+direction shooting and Spacebar.
