ZZT Sound Plus exhibition

Finally! Here's a video I've made that shows how ZZT Sound Plus works.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ld42KbwDjPY

There will be much more to the interface later. But the proof of concept has been nailed to the wall!

Window functions

I'm trying to pick an ideal window function in ZZT Sound Plus. Vacillating between Hann and Hamming. No matter what the choice, though, artifacts keep popping up in the output. But the output is sounding a lot better than it did at the start. Also, the problem of mysterious drops of prominent freque...

ZZT Sound Plus shenanigans

Brief update. The results from the note-capturing tool so far are spotty, allowing you to understand the remnants of the song when played back through the Hall of Music. But there is a ton of noise that interferes with the output. My goal is to find a way to quiet down, separate, or otherwise mitiga...

ZZT Sound Plus starting to work!

That extremely far-fetched idea I had, which was the tool ZZT Sound Plus , has started to bear fruit. I just recorded a 2-minute song, fed the waveform audio into the tool, and then copied the note sequence it had spat out back into the Hall of Music . The results were...like nails on a chalkboard, ...

Re: Releasing unfinished games?

Unfinished games? Perhaps...just as long as we're aware they're unfinished. There are some breathtakingly short games hosted on the site now, so being only partially done is hardly a dealbreaker.

Dr. Dos has been in the process for a while now compiling games at https://museumofzzt.com.

Update

After the successful beta (with sound!) of the HTML 5 version, I decided to focus on a few other areas. One area is the parts where the latest version is rough around the edges, such as the lack of ZIP file access and high score posting anomalies. I think I can create a limited JS handler for DEFLAT...

Can you hear me? Special Chris-mas encore!

Sound is now implemented in the HTML 5 version! HTML 5 beta: http://www.chriskallen.com/zzt/ZZTUltra_html5.html All the higher-tier songs play pretty much the same as the Flash version. Note that to get these latest changes, you might have to clear your browser cache. Fortunately, most of my low-lev...

Happy Holidays! HTML 5 version of ZZT Ultra is in beta!

Hi All, I'm pleased to announce the 1.3 beta release of the HTML 5 version of ZZT Ultra. It's silent (no sound yet), but it looks and plays almost identically to the Flash version. Enjoy! HTML 5 beta: http://www.chriskallen.com/zzt/ZZTUltra_html5.html HTML 5 beta with City of ZZT: http://www.chriska...

Getting close, now

Hi All, I've been diving through the editor code for the HTML 5 version of ZZT Ultra. Wow, is there a lot to fix. This conversion project has involved tens of thousands of lines of code, and the editor component alone contains nearly 7,000 lines. Various browsers also like to annoy me by mandating h...

Performance solved!

Yes!! I got the performance problem licked. Now the update rate is nearly as fast as AS3, including during scroll and dissolve transitions. Palette fades are still slow, and that's due to an unavoidable quirk I found with putImageData . Basically, in JavaScript, rendering a canvas to a context is f...

Smash ZZT works in HTML 5 version!

Great progress--I've been able to get Smash ZZT to play comfortably within the HTML 5 version of ZZT Ultra! The character set mods and palette color changes all had to function, plus a whole mess of other features as well, for the game to run. It is still slow, but I'm going to focus on performance ...

Re: Greetings, I just acquired the rights from Tim to remake

A "cattle prod" to program? Blasphemy! You should program without fear. I'm working on the HTML 5 version of ZZT Ultra. Nearly all of the AS3 code is converting nicely to JS code, so this super-accessible, embedded-within-web-page version isn't too far off. To Rayvolution: You should be ca...

Hiccups in the space-time continuum

This has been a wild ride...my progress has been derailed for a bit while I swapped out my hard drive. The previous one was starting to give out, so I had to port stuff over to the new one. Unfortunately, creating a system image wasn't possible because the old drive was saying screw you. So that mea...

Getting much closer now

Since most ZZT and SZT files play in the HTML 5 version of Ultra, I decided to work on WAD files. DEMO.WAD now plays completely, including the sample boss. This means nearly all of the advanced ZZT-OOP commands function properly, not to mention most of the WAD loading code. Palette changes are painf...

Full playthrough progress

Looks like the HTML 5 version of ZZT Ultra can fully play many adventures now , including some games that are technically impressive. CATCAT.ZZT plays perfectly. Everything is still very silent, though...I'm not looking forward to having to re-design my entire sound system. Performance metrics have ...
